Question by Zeph J: Which mountain bike is better?
The two bikes I’m looking at are around the same price so I want to know which is better. The first bike is a “2009 Mongoose Tyax Comp Disc Mountain Bike” and the second one is a Trek 3900.

I would suggest the Trek 3900, my personal experience with Trek is they are a much higher quality bike and will last very well. Mongoose is a good brand but you often need to upgrade the parts on the bike as they break and wear down.
The Trek also comes equipped with numerous shimano parts while the Mongoose comes with suntour, a lesser quality brand.
And finally the Mongoose comes with disc brakes which are mostly unnecessary, though nicer than regular brakes they add a sustainable cost onto the bike, that will further bring down the overall quality of the Mongoose bike.
I would suggest you get the Trek, but you should read some reviews to see what people think about each bike.

first the Mongoose, here are the specs: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=26339&subcategory_ID=3050 and the Trek 3900: http://www.trekbikes.com/int/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/3_series/3900/ Looks to me like there isn’t much difference here at all, just depends on where you are buying each of them. The name game really does not matter much with these two but what does matter is where you buy them and what you get for your dollar. I sell the Tyax and know it well and although the Mongoose does have Suntour front derailleur and fork, and a Sram X4 rear end which is the same as the Deore or alivio on the Trek you really are not comparing anything of differing quality here, They are the SAME! Personally I would opt for either one if I rode a hardtail at all ever and I would go for the Mongoose over the Trek because I do prefer the Sram components over the Shimano in this lower end group. Stop beatting yourself up over these two just determine the best price you can get for each one and pick one!
