Decisions

As the Seattle to Portland ride gets closer, I’ll have to decide which trike to take.

The Qnt26 looks cool and all, and on the flats I’m pretty fast, but overall, I’m still a slug.

The Micro, I’m still pretty fast with it overall – an example being tonight’s 40 mile ride: 19.2 mph average for 2 hours!

I know the STP isn’t a race, but it is sure nice to get to Portland earlier in the day.

  • It is pretty impressive to look at your HRM readings and see how hard you push for 2 hours. Hopefully I will see you at the STP.

  • My max heartrate is 184 bpm. When training I keep my heartrate between 70-80% most of the time.

For centuries and longer rides, my heartrate reaches 90% or better early on and then settles down as I “find” my pace. Last year, the second half of the STP I couldn’t get my heartrate over 75%, but that is understandable knowing that I was riding at 90% for over 5 hours!

Looking at the graph, the top line is my heartrate, barely reaching 80% most of this ride. This is where training with a stationary trainer comes in handy. I can work at higher heartrates in a controlled environment. My favorite way to train is with intervals, you can get fit in a short amount of time.

Barring anything unforseen, I’ll be at the Seattle to Portland. My family and I will be in Seattle Thursday evening (I know a bit early) visiting family, taking it easy on Friday to get ready for the big ride on Saturday.
