My trike is showing it’s age - over four years of road riding, pits, scratches and chips are showing on the powder coat, I may just have the trike’s powder coat redone, I’m also debating on additional changes for the trike: new chainrings or a new rear triangle.
I’ve been using a larger chainring now, and highly enjoy it – it did well during the Seattle to Portland, however, to really match the gearing of a 26″ road bike, my chainrings will need to be larger – 67t for the top, 51t for the middle and 36t for the “granny” – can you say “buzz saw”.
Using the gearing of a compact douple, 50/34, my chainrings would work out to be 61/41, I’m almost there now with my 58/42/30, and I have the room to move the front derailure.
The list of the possible changes:
1) New 60t chain ring
2) New carbon double, chainrings and bottom bracket
3) New rear triangle, 26″ rear wheel built, new rear derailure
4) Framkit for a new trike and parts purchased stateside
5) Complete new trike
In essence, I could have a “new” trike by swapping out the crank, bottom bracket, rear triangle, new rear wheel, new rear derailure and having the whole thing repowder coated…
So many options, so little money!
